Top 7 Reasons Nigerian Universities are Better than Polytechnics

1. Admission Qualifications

The level of qualifications needed for university admission is a lot higher than the qualifications required for a polytechnic. Examination bodies like jamb set a benchmark of 150/400 for polytechnics. They set a higher baseline of 180/400 for universities meaning if you dream of university admission, you would need to study harder.

2. Quality of Students

It’s quite evident from the first reason that a lot of young and brilliant Nigerian students would opt for universities; most times, it’s the students that have written jamb couple of times and couldn’t make up the cut-off mark of any university that choose to apply for a polytechnic admission as a last resort. That’s why polytechnics always have a few smart students.

3. Funding from The Government

If you understand the scope of the tertiary education system in Nigeria, you would know the government gives a lot more funds to the universities than their polytechnic counterparts, even more attention is given to the demands of the university governing body (ASUU). This results in a higher quality of education from a university.

4. Elegant Buildings and Large Campuses

No Nigerian polytechnic can compete with a Nigerian university in terms of well-designed structures and architectural prowess. The quality of buildings in an institution tells a lot about the quality of life there, and this is due to their high funding, as much money flows into the universities, which helps to initiate such projects.

5. Highly Trained Lecturers

The quality of lecturers in the universities cannot be compared to the ones in polytechnics. The level of expertise and experience is high as many lecturers in the university setting are professors and doctors with their respective Ph.D.’s coupled with years of teaching experience. Even Master’s degree holders end up settling for assistant lecturer positions. While in the polytechnic setting where most of their lecturers are mere B.Sc. holders with minimal years of teaching experience.

6. Quality Graduates

There is a huge preference for university graduates, especially when it comes to white-collar jobs. Most times, the polytechnic graduates are seen as mid-level manpower, maybe because that was the reason the polytechnics were created in the first place. Well, this preference creates many opportunities for university graduates both locally and internationally and gives higher self-esteem over their polytechnic counterparts

7. Postgraduate Opportunities

There are lots of postgraduate opportunities for a university graduate with many scholarship opportunities to further their studies in any foreign country. while there are minimal postgraduate opportunities for polytechnic graduates as most times, they have to apply for a B.sc to obtain some of these opportunities.

Well, it’s imperative to know that everyone has a chance to be successful no matter the level of education they attain.
